BANDSPACE
DESCRIPTION
A popular independent music production facility widely praised by local musicians for its welcoming, relaxed atmosphere, offering free on-site parking, and operating as an explicitly designated LGBTQ+ friendly and transgender safe space. The studio's operating philosophy focuses on removing the logistical and social barriers often associated with traditional rehearsal spaces. Its management actively upgrades the gear, ensuring crisp acoustics, fresh drumheads and reliable hardware. Each room is physically isolated to prevent sound bleed, allowing multiple bands to rehearse simultaneously without audio interference.
HISTORY & CLIENTS
The business began in 1989 under the name Legends Studios. The unit was bare, with no rooms and no equipment. Three rooms were built, soundproofed and equipped with quality gear. Since then, it has seen many changes. One of which lasted for 11 years while it was owned by the Moodie family. Along side the management of their local music store Music Warehouse, they took over Legend Studios and changed the name to the Unit One and added a fourth room. The bands and musical projects specifically documented using the space for rehearsals and practice sessions include Kaine, Tony James Shevlin & The Chancers, The Qrew and Regicide.
LOCATIONS SERVED
The studio acts as a central rehearsal hub serving musicians traveling from Colchester, Hythe, University of Essex campus, Witham, Braintree, Chelmsford and Clacton-on-Sea.
