Kent's music rehearsal spaces reflect the county's rich history, where coastal indie scenes, cathedral choral traditions and lively countryside festivals create a diverse and valued community asset.

The county of Kent in the UK has had its fair share of notable music artists. The enduring Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones were both born and raised in Dartford, Kent. Kate Bush was born in Bexleyheath and is one of the most innovative and acclaimed solo artists in British music history. Soft Machine formed in Canterbury 1966 and became a pioneering force in the psychedelic rock and jazz-fusion movements.

For music fans, longstanding music venues taking touring bands include Folkestone's Leas Cliff Hall, Tunbridge Wells' Forum and Ramsgate's Music Hall. Recording studios are also well represented with Blue Bell Hill Studios near Chatham hosting the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay and Kasabian. Then there is The Albion Rooms in Margate founded by the indie rock band The Libertines which acts as a residential studio inside a Victorian townhouse facing the sea. For recording artists wanting the seclusion of a country retreat there's the The Joplin House which is tucked away in a purpose-built facility near Ashford known for its vintage gear.

The top three most notable music genres and movements originating from or deeply tied to Kent are The Canterbury Scene (Progressive Rock/Jazz Fusion) with iconic local bands like Soft Machine and Caravan, The Medway Scene (Garage Rock/Punk) with its dynamic DIY culture spearheaded by local figures like Billy Childish, and Kentish Folk (Traditional British Folk) whose key Artists include The Oysterband and The Ashen Keys.

The most popular music genres in Kent mirror the broader trends of the UK while maintaining a unique local flair shaped by the county's distinct coastal, rural and suburban identities. Pop and Rock lead mainstream popularity, while Indie, Electronic/Dance and Americana/Folk heavily dominate the local live music and festival scenes.

Kent has 17 locations given over to professional music rehearsal spaces with a total of 35 rooms. The largest spaces each with four rooms are situated at opposite ends of the county in Erith (Banana Road Studios) and Ramsgate (The Good Rehearsal Rooms). The Kent music rehearsal scene is a thriving, eclectic mix of rural creative retreats, industrial estate practice hubs and grassroots studio facilities. It benefits greatly from its proximity to London, attracting gigging bands, serious touring artists and hobbyists alike to rehearse across the county.
